How to Use Nurse Overtime & Shift Differential Pay Calculator
How it Works
This section provides transparency on the complex math used behind the scenes.
How it Works: Our calculator utilizes the Weighted Average Regular Rate method mandated by the FLSA for healthcare employees.
Data Collection: The tool collects your base pay and all shift differentials (e.g., +$5.00 for nights).
Straight-Time Calculation: It calculates your total earnings for all hours worked as if no overtime occurred.
The Regular Rate: It divides your total straight-time pay by your total hours worked. This “Weighted Average” is your legal “Regular Rate.”
The Overtime Premium: The tool then applies a 0.5x multiplier to this Regular Rate for every hour over the threshold (40 hours/week or the 8/80 rule) and adds it to your total.
State Rules: If California is selected, the tool automatically triggers 1.5x pay after 8 hours and 2x (Double Time) after 12 hours in a single workday.
